Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick called it absurd to suggest there was any pact to orchestrate a pre-arranged draw.
He said the chaotic final 15 minutes in Kansas City made it obvious neither team was trying to recreate the ‘Disgrace of Gijón’.
“With a 3-3 like this, especially after those frantic last 90 seconds, no one can reasonably claim there was an agreement,” Rangnick said.
“If, with three minutes remaining, someone had predicted this ending, you’d have said they were crazy.
“I’ve been coaching for around 40 years and I can barely recall a match with a trajectory this dramatic and unexpected.
“Most people expected 0-0 or 1-1, and it finishes 3-3. It’s unbelievable — the dressing room is chaos. If Alfred Hitchcock had written this, I’d probably have said he’d gone completely mad.”
Algeria manager Vladimir Petkovic also dismissed any talk of a deal.
“I’m thrilled that, in the end, football was the winner — a 3-3 scoreline says everything,” he said.
Austria will face Spain in the last 32 in Los Angeles on Thursday, 2 July (20:00 BST), while Algeria meet Switzerland in Vancouver on Friday, 3 July (04:00 BST).
