World Cup 2026: Anthony…

Barry’s playing career took a very different route from most of the current England squad, with the former midfielder spending the majority of his time in the lower leagues. Twenty years ago, he helped Accrington Stanley win the Conference, ending the club’s 44-year wait to return to the Football League. Speaking to 5 Live Sport, he admitted the anniversary made him pause and reflect on just how long ago that triumph was.

After retiring, Barry began coaching as assistant manager at Wigan Athletic. His work on the UEFA Pro Licence caught Frank Lampard’s eye, leading to a move to Chelsea as first-team coach in the summer of 2020. When Lampard departed in January 2021, Thomas Tuchel took over and kept Barry on staff; within months, Chelsea won the Champions League.

Barry also broadened his experience internationally, serving as an assistant with the Republic of Ireland before taking the same role under Roberto Martínez with Belgium and later Portugal. That journey put him on the touchline at both a World Cup and a European Championship, working with global stars including Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne.

Renowned as an innovative, energetic coach and a set-piece specialist, Barry even based his Pro Licence dissertation on an analysis of 17,000 throw-ins.

He reunited with Tuchel at Bayern Munich in 2023. Barry has called Tuchel a world-class manager who thrives in the intensity of major competitions, saying they push each other—and, in turn, push the team.

Barry is the only English coach in Tuchel’s core staff, though Justin Cochrane is part of the wider group. Alongside Tuchel and Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer, and James Melbourne have also signed new contracts running until 2028.
