Spain coach Luis de la Fuente hailed Mikel as outstanding after the quarter-final victory.
He said Mikel has a wide range of qualities and would have shone for any team at this World Cup.
For Spain, he embodies their philosophy and approach. De la Fuente called it a pleasure to have him—among others, but especially him—and said he can always be counted on.
Yet despite that reliability, Merino admitted he once doubted he’d be fit enough to feature at this World Cup.
After the win over Portugal, Merino reflected that a few months ago even being here felt unimaginable.
He said he is at a peak right now, savoring one of the happiest moments of his career.
He also looked back on the hard times and thanked everyone who supported and pushed him when his own belief wavered.
Arsenal fans will recognize Merino’s late-game heroics, with the 30-year-old having delivered similar moments for the Gunners.
Although chiefly a midfielder, his height has seen Mikel Arteta use him as a striker, first notably when he came off the bench to score twice in a 2-0 win over Leicester in February last year.
On Match of the Day, former England forward Wayne Rooney said Merino is one of those players who shows up at exactly the right moment in big matches.
De la Fuente added that Merino’s game intelligence allows him to be both a top striker and a top midfielder, noting his commitment, generosity, and willingness to work.
