England’s 3-2 win over Mexico was arguably the tournament’s standout match so far.
I loved the grit they showed with 10 men—the substitutes made an impact, John Stones threw himself in front of everything, Dan Burn dominated in the air, and Djed Spence made several crucial tackles.
This will be a different kind of examination for Thomas Tuchel’s team, but I expect it to be just as tight.
Orjan Nyland’s excellent saves helped Norway overcome Brazil, and from what I’ve seen, they’re a strong side.
Everyone knows about their star pair, Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland, and after toppling Brazil, I’m sure Haaland will have a major influence here too.
His movement for his first goal against Brazil was sensational. The face-off with Gabriel was hyped beforehand, but Haaland won it decisively.
Heading isn’t even his best weapon, yet he drifted out of Gabriel’s sightline, read the cross early, and the defender never got close.
I expect more goals in this one, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Haaland scores a couple.
England haven’t controlled matches as many expected; at this World Cup they’ve been a team of moments, producing quality at just the right times.
Even so, I don’t see Norway’s defense keeping Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham quiet.
If the game opens up, England won’t mind at all. I think there’s another level in their attack, starting here.
