Record signing Nathan Broadhead found the net as Wrexham secured a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Bristol City in the English League Championship.
This marked only Broadhead’s third league goal since his summer transfer from Ipswich, showcasing a stunning strike in the first half at The Racecourse Ground on Wednesday.
Wrexham sealed the win with an own goal from Robins goalkeeper Radek Vitek, following a corner from George Thomason that hit the post and deflected off the Manchester United loanee.
This victory propelled the Welsh team, who started at 15th place, closer to the playoff positions and prevented City from moving into fourth place.
Wrexham deserved the win, showcasing their intent early on by taking the lead in the 16th minute with Broadhead’s fantastic goal.
The Wales international added to the tally with a beautiful curled shot from 25 yards, following a counterattack led by James McClean and a lay-off from Thomason.
Wrexham threatened to increase their lead with Ben Sheaf shooting over the bar, while City missed an opportunity to equalize when Anis Mehmeti failed to hit the target after a pass from Yu Hirakawa.
George Dobson could have doubled Wrexham’s advantage during a one-on-one but sent his effort just wide of the post.
Ross McCrorie managed to score for the Robins just before the interval, tapping in a loose ball, but the goal was disallowed for a foul committed on goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo by Emil Riis.
Wrexham created an early chance in the second half with a swift counter, but Thomason fired high after receiving a pass from Broadhead, and Kieffer Moore soon followed with a shot that went wide.
City’s Mehmeti was thwarted from distance by Okonkwo, who faced some pressure, but Wrexham soon regained control, with Moore’s efforts blocked by Vitek during another quick attack.
The match was ultimately decided 16 minutes from time in an unusual fashion when Thomason’s inswinging corner hit the far post and ricocheted into the net off Vitek.
Thomason initially believed the goal was credited to him—it would have been his first for the club—but it was ultimately the goalkeeper who touched it last.
City pressed forward until the final whistle, with Okonkwo making a crucial save from Mehmeti in the dying moments, but the points belonged to Wrexham, who extended their unbeaten league streak to seven matches.
