Wrexham leveraged to…

As the final day of the regular Championship season approaches, Matty James is hoping that history favors Wrexham in their quest for a playoff spot.

Currently sitting in sixth place, Wrexham faces a crucial home match against Middlesbrough on Saturday, embroiled in a tight three-way battle for the last playoff position with Hull and Derby.

The scenario is complex; Wrexham could potentially win and still miss out on the playoffs, or they could lose and still secure a top-six finish. This season marks their attempt at a fourth consecutive promotion under the ownership of Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, along with manager Phil Parkinson.

Veteran midfielder James is no stranger to the playoff experience, having previously scored in Leicester’s 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest in 2013. That season ended with the Foxes falling to Watford in the playoffs due to a late goal from Troy Deeney.

“We [Leicester] managed to sneak into sixth on the final day,” recounted the 34-year-old, who joined Wrexham as a free agent in October 2024 and played a key role in helping the club ascend from League One last season.

“After that, we had the playoffs against Watford, which is a moment from the past that occasionally resurfaces on TV—one that I don’t particularly enjoy reliving,” James shared.

“However, we achieved promotion the following year, and I draw on those experiences, as well as those of many teammates who have been through similar challenges in the league. This football club has a history of winning promotions, and we aim to leverage that experience this Saturday.”

James has played a crucial role in stabilizing Wrexham during the final stretch of the season, having missed two months due to a broken toe sustained in February against Millwall. He has been playing in boots a few sizes too large due to ongoing swelling in his toe.

“For me, it’s about putting my boots on, forgetting the pain, and simply focusing on playing and performing,” he emphasized. “The adrenaline kicks in, and I manage through the week. Everyone is buzzing for big games, and that’s exactly what we train for and play for. Being in this position is a significant achievement. Now, it’s about seizing the opportunity. The overarching message has been centered on us.”

“I’m sure there will be distractions around the stadium and different things happening, but for us, it’s crucial to focus on our performance and the result.”
