Wrexham Regret Nothing…

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson expressed his disappointment after watching Jannik Vestergaard equalize for Leicester during a “nothing moment” in their 1-1 draw. Despite the outcome, he identified several positives from his team’s determined performance in challenging weather conditions.

The Dragons controlled the match for much of the rainy and windy evening in north Wales, taking the lead with Lewis O’Brien’s goal in the 63rd minute as they held back a lackluster Leicester side for the majority of the second half.

Leicester managed to create a chance only after falling behind, winning a late free kick from which Caleb Okoli helped set up Vestergaard’s goal with a flick on Jordan Ayew’s chip.

While Wrexham showed an improved performance compared to their recent 2-1 home loss to Norwich, they were unable to secure a victory that would have pulled them level on points with sixth-place Preston.

Parkinson reflected, “In another hour, I might focus on the positives, but conceding late in a moment that felt inconsequential, of course, stings. If we take away that moment at the end, I’d say everyone gave a gritty, hardworking performance and it was a strong response from the weekend.”

“However, the disappointment lingers because we didn’t deal with a ball thrown into the box, which the wind affected. If we head that clear, we would have won. Their reaction was quicker – it felt like a slow-motion play. We’re frustrated because aside from one counter-attack in the second half, they didn’t challenge us the entire night.”

Instead of matching Preston’s points total after their 3-0 home defeat by Hull, Wrexham had to settle for ninth place.

Leicester, managed by Marti Cifuentes, struggled to make an impact for much of the night but managed to take advantage of Wrexham’s inability to secure a second goal.

Cifuentes acknowledged his team’s difficulties adapting to the conditions but commended their perseverance in securing a late equalizer. “The second half wasn’t our best,” he said. “When they took the lead, it affected us emotionally, leading to frustration in some situations that were hard to comprehend. Yet, I credit the players for fighting until the end, and we managed to earn a point.”

He added, “This result doesn’t change our disappointment. We always aim for three points, regardless of our opponent or their status. One point is better than none, but it’s not what we wanted.” Regarding his side’s lack of goal-scoring opportunities, Cifuentes stated, “We need to do much better. You could see the emotions after the goal. In the last few minutes, we were perhaps more aggressive in pursuit of a second goal.”

Wrexham will return to action on Saturday against Queens Park Rangers.
