Spain players Lamine Yamal and Pedro Porro trained apart from their teammates during Thursday’s training session in New Jersey. However, they are anticipated to be fit for the upcoming World Cup final against Argentina at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
Yamal and Porro, who played 84 and 90 minutes respectively in Spain’s semifinal win over France on Tuesday, both finished the match feeling fatigued and facing some physical discomfort.
The Tottenham fullback was substituted in the 85th minute against France due to muscle discomfort. Coach De la Fuente indicated on Wednesday that the defender is dealing with muscle overload and will undergo further assessment before the final.
ESPN sources have mentioned that both players are likely to be available for Sunday’s match, with their separate training being a precautionary measure for workload management.
Lamine Yamal has played 496 minutes and has started every match in the World Cup, except for the one against Cape Verde.
After the match against France, De la Fuente stated that the Barcelona star appeared to be in good condition. “From what I understand, Lamine doesn’t have anything serious. I just spoke with the medical staff, and everything seems to be looking positive,” he said.
Porro has started five of the seven games Spain has played in the tournament, having secured the starting right-back position over Marcos Llorente. He has logged 444 minutes and scored in the Round of 32 against Austria and again against France in the semis.
Spain will be competing in only their second outdoor match of the tournament.
While the northeastern United States has been affected by smoke from Canadian wildfires, prompting health alerts, rain is expected over the weekend, which should help improve the weather for Sunday’s final in New Jersey.
