INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Lamine Yamal declared that “the World Cup starts now” after delivering an impressive performance in Spain’s 3-0 victory over Austria at SoFi Stadium, where he earned the title of MVP.
Forward Mikel Oyarzabal scored two goals, bringing his total to four goals and one assist in the World Cup, sandwiching a header from Pedro Porro, as Spain advanced confidently to the round of 16.
After facing some struggles in the group stage, European champions Spain showcased their true potential in Thursday’s knockout match, solidifying their status as pre-tournament favorites.
“The World Cup starts now,” Yamal told reporters after the match. “In the knockout phase, if you lose, you go home. None of us want that.”
At just 18 years old, Yamal participated for 85 minutes against Austria, marking his longest appearance in this World Cup after returning from injury.
“I’m feeling good. Now I’m at 100%,” he stated. “I’m prepared to play however the coach decides. I just need to continue resting and taking care of myself. I’m fully fit.” He had six shots against Austria, four of which were on target, created two chances, and successfully recovered possession five times.
“We all wanted to make it to Dallas for the last 16,” Yamal expressed. “Step by step, I’m starting to feel like myself again, making the runs I need to, dribbling, and I’m very happy.”
Austrian coach Ralf Rangnick commended Spain’s performance and expressed his belief that they could go on to win the World Cup. He referred to Yamal as “one of the biggest talents we’ve seen at his age.”
“I can’t recall any unforced errors on their part,” remarked Rangnick, the former Manchester United coach. “Spain delivered their best performance today. I dare say we competed not just against the European champions but possibly the future world champions.”
“There are so many reasons to be happy today,” said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente during his post-match press conference. “We won, and the team’s performance was fantastic. We feel great, but there’s still room for improvement in the next match.
“What you witnessed may represent the best of us, but we are committed to improving. This team has yet to reach its maximum potential; there’s a lot more to accomplish. I appreciate [Rangnick] for his comments, but our satisfaction isn’t complete yet.”
Spain is set to face Portugal or Croatia in the round of 16 in Dallas on Monday.
