Everton Remains on the Hunt for Their First Home League Win of the Season Following a 2-1 Loss to Manchester City at Goodison Park
Vivianne Miedema’s early strike for the visitors was equalized by a Kelly Gago goal just before halftime. Khadija Shaw then secured the victory for Manchester City with a decisive goal in the second half.
Shaw created an early threat at the Everton goal, but home goalkeeper Emily Ramsey made a crucial save to keep her at bay.
Miedema attempted to create a goal-scoring opportunity but couldn’t convert, while at the other end, Martina Fernández came close for Everton. Toni Payne also had a chance, but her effort narrowly missed the target, and Ayaka Yamashita captured Ornella Vignola’s powerful strike.
Miedema opened the scoring for Manchester City in the 21st minute with a well-placed shot after receiving a perfect pass from Iman Beney.
Everton responded quickly, with Payne coming close again as Yamashita rushed out of her goal. Unfortunately for the Toffees, the ball went just wide.
Everton had an even better opportunity when Ruby Mace delivered a corner that Gago met with a well-timed header, but Yamashita made a spectacular save.
Just before the halftime whistle, Gago brought Everton level, capitalizing on a fantastic run by Payne who set her up to deftly flick the ball into the corner of the net.
In the second half, the roles reversed as Gago set up Payne, but Yamashita once again intervened to deny the Toffees.
In the 54th minute, Shaw reclaimed the lead for Manchester City with a well-placed header.
Everton pressed hard for an equalizer. Gago attempted another shot but couldn’t significantly challenge Yamashita, while Vignola executed a brilliant turn and powerful shot that struck the inside of the post, leaving Everton frustrated.
Yamashita made a critical save to thwart Hikaru Kitagawa, who attempted to score after a precise cutback from Katie Robinson, but the keeper was quick to smother the danger.
This result propels Manchester City to the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table, while Everton finds themselves in tenth place.
