This defeat sealed Italy’s second-place finish in World Cup qualification Group I, forcing them into the playoffs for the third consecutive cycle. Norway, boasting a perfect qualifying record, topped the group and secured direct entry into the tournament this June.

Fabregas resonates with this perspective, recounting experiences that reinforce this notion.
“Let me compare it to Spain,” Fabregas stated in an interview with La Provincia di Como (via TMW). “In Spain, there’s an intense focus on promoting youth players to the first team and preparing them for the national squad. This dedication is less pronounced in Italy; let me share an example.

“When I coached the Primavera side, I had a squad that lacked balance in specific areas, so I called up two talented players from the U16s to join the Primavera team. This decision caused some controversy, as it was seen as disrupting the development pathway.
“This is an area where Italian football needs to advance.”
