Wiegman Stands Firm in…

Sarina Wiegman maintains that she wouldn’t have acted differently, despite criticism from Mary Earps regarding the choice of starting goalkeeper for Euro 2025.

In her autobiography, the former England goalkeeper claims she expressed concern to Wiegman about the decision to recall Hannah Hampton after previously dropping her for being “disruptive and unreliable,” asserting that it rewarded “bad behavior.”

Earps’ criticisms have led to debate, with Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor being one of the defenders of both Hampton and Wiegman.

Just five weeks before England begins their title defense in Switzerland, Earps announced her unexpected retirement from international football.

Wiegman, who has led England to two Euros titles, remarked that she hasn’t communicated with the Paris St-Germain player since the book’s release.

“We had a strong goalkeeper unit, and both were vying for the number one position. I believe I would have made the same choice,” Wiegman stated when asked if the situation had taught her anything.

“We maintained open communication throughout. We always aim to provide support in the best way, but I can’t control how that is perceived. There are always lessons to be learned, but in the grand scheme, I wouldn’t alter my decisions.”

Wiegman: I Can’t Control Others’ Reactions

Wiegman acknowledged her inability to control Earps’ remarks or feelings about her decisions, but emphasized that her choices are made with the team’s success in mind.

England will face China at Wembley Stadium on November 29, then host Ghana at St Mary’s Stadium on December 2.

During a recent press conference to unveil her squad, the focus was largely on Earps, prompting Wiegman to quip that she would prefer to discuss football instead.

The notable return of Manchester City forward Lauren Hemp and midfielder Grace Clinton highlights Wiegman’s 25-player squad for the upcoming friendlies.

However, Wiegman acknowledges that facing challenges is an inherent part of her high-profile position. “While one hopes for positive outcomes, it’s not always the reality in football,” she said. “You must navigate the situation as best as you can, resolve any issues, and move forward.”

“I make decisions that I believe are in the best interest of the team for our upcoming camps and tournaments, focused on winning.”

When asked about Earps expressing that her trust and respect for Wiegman had “evaporated” and their connection was “destroyed,” Wiegman replied, “I don’t believe I can change that. I strive to be as honest as possible and maintain a strong working relationship, which I believe we had.”

“I can’t control external factors. I focus on my approach and maintain clarity and honesty in my decisions to win.”

Wiegman also emphasized that she keeps discussions private to foster trust. “I share information with the media, but individual conversations remain confidential to build rapport. This encourages players to approach me as needed, creating an environment where they can be themselves.”

Hampton, the Chelsea goalkeeper, is not included in the squad for the final two matches of the year due to a thigh injury. The 24-year-old recently won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper and was a standout performer at Euro 2025.

Wiegman confirmed she spoke with Hampton following Earps’ book release but refrained from discussing the details of their conversation. “I do converse with players between camps, and unfortunately she is injured now. But yes, I did speak to her,” Wiegman stated. “The specifics of that conversation will remain private, as always.”
