Newcastle United Eye Lazio…

Matteo Guendouzi’s future at Lazio is looking uncertain due to financial constraints that may compel the club to sell players. According to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness, both Newcastle United and Sunderland have expressed significant interest in the 26-year-old midfielder.

Interest from Newcastle United

Guendouzi joined Lazio from Marseille in 2023 on an initial loan, but his impressive performances led the club to make the deal permanent. He played in 48 matches last season, scoring six goals and playing a crucial role in Lazio’s campaign. However, despite starting most league games this season and contributing with two assists, his performance has dipped.

Under Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 formation, Guendouzi may not be playing to his strengths, and even though Sarri would prefer to retain him, the club’s financial situation might necessitate a sale. Lazio hopes to hold off until the summer transfer window but is open to listening to winter offers around €25–30 million if they meet their expectations. Additionally, some reports suggest Newcastle may also pursue Allan Elias.

Assessing Newcastle’s Need

In deciding whether to pursue Guendouzi, Newcastle needs to adopt a practical approach. Their midfield sometimes lacks balance and presence, particularly in high-pressure situations. Reintroducing Guendouzi to the Premier League could address these issues, as he brings energy, positional discipline, and valuable top-flight experience from his time at Arsenal.

Nevertheless, his recent struggles indicate he may require time to readjust. The Magpies need players who can make an immediate impact, and given their current inconsistencies, they cannot afford another player who requires a gradual adaptation period.

While Guendouzi aligns with what Newcastle is seeking, he doesn’t match the urgency of their immediate needs. At this juncture, Newcastle should explore alternative options that promise more immediate reliability, even though the potential benefits of signing him are enticing.
