MLS playoffs: Vancouver…

It was a hard-fought battle, and not without its challenges, but the Vancouver Whitecaps are making history by advancing to the Western Conference final for the first time ever. Even after being reduced to just nine players by the end of extra time, the Whitecaps managed to clinch victory over LAFC in a thrilling penalty shootout on Saturday. Next weekend, they will face the winner of the upcoming match between San Diego FC and Minnesota United.

Mathias Laborda stepped up to score the decisive penalty, sending the 53,957 passionate yet fatigued fans at BC Place into a frenzy.

Initially, the match appeared to be swinging in favor of LAFC. The Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but Son Heung-min created his memorable MLS moment by reducing the deficit with a goal in the 60th minute. He later capped off his performance with a stunning free kick during stoppage time, equalizing the match.

Just moments before Son’s equalizer, Vancouver lost MLS Defender of the Year Tristan Blackmon to a second yellow card, leaving them with only 10 players. As extra time approached, the situation grew even more precarious when Belal Halbouni required a stretcher in the 112th minute, leaving the Whitecaps with just nine on the field. With no substitutions left, they faced a daunting 12 minutes of play against a relentless LAFC side.

During those closing moments, LAFC bombarded Vancouver’s defense with shots—eight in total. Two of these attempts came in a frantic finale where Denis Bouanga struck the crossbar twice in just five seconds, leaving LAFC fans pondering what could have been this offseason.

Despite his earlier heroics, Son missed LAFC’s first penalty kick, and Mark Delgaldo also failed to convert his spot-kick. Meanwhile, Laborda’s successful penalty sealed the win for Vancouver.

This season has been remarkable for the Whitecaps, especially after the addition of German legend Thomas Müller, which strengthened their already potent scoring lineup. What began as a struggle transformed into a historic achievement for the team.
