It’s clear that questioning Eddie Howe often leads to satisfying answers. Is it premature to suggest that our season might be turning a corner? Definitely. It’s just one solid league win at home.

Am I going to make that claim anyway? Absolutely.

This past Saturday, Newcastle not only secured a victory but did so against Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola providing an entertaining show on the sidelines. Remarkably, this victory came despite changes in personnel and adjustments to the formation.

While I could discuss various aspects of the match, I want to focus on Harvey Barnes.

Barnes epitomizes Newcastle United as a whole, as he has experienced ups and downs in his performance. At times, he has struggled to make his mark on games and faced competition for his spot from Anthony Gordon.

With Gordon injured, Barnes had the chance to start on Saturday, and his impressive performance has now cast doubt on Gordon’s return to the lineup.

When Barnes joined our team, a Leicester fan expressed relief, stating he only managed to provide assists and goals. Ironically, those are the qualities that lead to winning games, so I’m more than satisfied with that assessment.

Though Barnes’ game has room for improvement, he’s capable of thriving with support from a more agile left-back. He is undeniably a ‘confidence player’ who thrives on playing time and solid performances to enhance his game. If Saturday’s match is any indication, his progress will be swift.

Barnes is essential for kickstarting the 2025-26 season. While it’s frustrating that this momentum is emerging almost in December, there’s still ample opportunity to revitalize our campaign. I’m feeling a renewed sense of excitement. Until next week.
