Last weekend, Barcelona kicked off their first match at the newly renovated Spotify Camp Nou, taking on Athletic Club in a game that turned out to be quite memorable, with Barcelona winning by a decisive four-goal margin.
However, during the match, the crowd spent considerable time booing one particular opposing player, distracting from the celebration of the stadium’s reopening after a two-year renovation.

The player in question was Nico Williams, who drew the ire of the crowd due to his decision to stay with Athletic Club despite being on the brink of a move to Barcelona in the summer. Ultimately, he turned down Barcelona to extend his contract with his current team.
Williams Reflects on Barcelona
Recently, Williams shared his thoughts with SPORT regarding his choice not to join Barcelona last summer and the reasons behind his last-minute decision.
“I’ve always prioritized my feelings and followed my heart. I’m very close to my family, and here in Bilbao, I have their support in every step I take,” he explained, emphasizing his preference for a familiar environment.

“I enjoy taking my brother’s advice; he always provides great insight, and now playing in the Champions League together is a dream come true,” he added, highlighting the importance of family in his decisions.
Williams also commented on his close friend and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, praising the young player’s impressive talent.
“He possesses incredible ability and showcases it daily, but he knows I’m like a big brother to him,” he joked.
The player defended Yamal’s lifestyle, which has faced scrutiny since his rise to fame.
“Everyone has the right to live life as they please, but it’s crucial to remain professional and always give your best on the field,” Williams stated.
“Off the pitch, we need to enjoy ourselves as anyone else would. As long as respect and commitment are maintained, I don’t see any issues with that,” he concluded.
