Liverpool is experiencing their worst stretch of form in 76 years, but the issues run much deeper than that.
On Wednesday evening, Liverpool faced another defeat, this time in the UEFA Champions League, as PSV Eindhoven delivered a heavy blow with a 4-1 victory.

This lackluster performance marks Liverpool’s ninth loss in the last 12 matches—a worrying statistic that highlights a significant decline in their performance.
Liverpool are not known for losing consistently like this. However, solid performances remain elusive, with their recent win against Aston Villa aided by luck, as the opposition struck the woodwork twice.
It’s true that luck has seemingly abandoned Liverpool; for instance, Virgil van Dijk hit the crossbar with a shot that could have put them ahead against PSV.
To a degree, one might argue that this run of nine defeats in 12 games partly stems from misfortune. However, it’s no longer a small sample size, although it isn’t incredibly large either.

Yet the problem extends beyond just 12 games; that’s where the real concern lies.
The Downward Spiral
While the last 12 matches have been difficult, Liverpool’s struggles can be traced back nearly a year—this isn’t something new.
In fact, they have secured just 21 wins from their last 42 games, which is a dismal record. If we refer to this as a run of form, it’s more indicative of what the club has become.
The decline in performance during the latter half of last season was somewhat obscured by a couple of factors. First, they cruised to the Premier League title, leading to a natural decrease in intensity.
Second, Liverpool appeared fatigued after the New Year, with the expectation that things would improve after the summer with the addition of new players to strengthen the squad.
In fact, you could argue there were three factors that somewhat masked the situation, given that anticipated transfers promised a different team dynamic for the season ahead. However, these hopes have turned into a source of concern.
This is a new team; Liverpool has made several signings, yet the performances remain eerily similar to what we’ve seen earlier in 2025. It appears that the underlying issues transcend the players on the pitch.
When this happens, it’s crucial to examine the system and the strategies in place. There needs to be a change, as even with new faces, the same disappointing results persist.

The actual results are even more alarming. Focusing solely on the last 12 matches overlooks the fact that this decline has been ongoing for a significant time, making it increasingly unlikely that a turnaround is imminent.
