Yoane Wissa Excluded from…

Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa will continue to stay on Tyneside this January, having been excluded from DR Congo’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. This decision aligns with his anticipated return from injury.

The 29-year-old, who made a £55 million move to Newcastle from Brentford last summer, has yet to play a match due to a knee injury sustained while representing his country in September. However, he has made significant progress in his recovery this week, returning to full training and making a positive impression on head coach Eddie Howe during initial sessions with the team.

Howe noted that the striker is “close to being back involved.” According to Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie, Wissa’s “priority is on Newcastle,” a viewpoint reflected in DR Congo’s choice to omit him from their tournament roster.

Having Wissa available throughout January will be a welcome boost for Howe, who has been managing a demanding season with a limited attacking squad. Newcastle’s forward positions have occasionally lacked depth, and the potential return of Wissa, known for his speed, direct style, and finishing prowess, is seen as a valuable addition as the team aims to improve its standing in the Premier League.

Although Howe has not specified a date for Wissa’s first match, the atmosphere surrounding his recovery is increasingly positive. The striker appears to be wholly focused on making an impact at St James’ Park.
