Paolo Vanoli expressed his frustrations in a passionate outburst, claiming that the penalty incident involving Fiorentina was more severe than previously recognized. “We owe our fans an apology. Right now, we need true leaders, not just players,” he stated.

The team is currently at the bottom of the league standings without a single victory in Serie A this season—an alarming predicament that historically leads to relegation.

Fiorentina initially took the lead at Mapei Stadium with a penalty converted by Rolando Mandragora but ultimately fell apart, losing 3-1 to Sassuolo.

“We must apologize to our fans,” Vanoli stated during his impassioned post-match conference, following comments made by sporting director Roberto Goretti.

“In moments like this, we require real leaders, not just players. This match exemplified our ongoing issues. No more excuses; we need courage.”

DAZN Italia’s sideline reporter noted that Vanoli was taken aback by the extent of the ‘fear’ his players displayed, with predictable long balls being sent into the box.

“How can there be fear when you’re leading 1-0? Fear should evaporate at that point,” Vanoli explained.

“It’s not merely about tactics; it’s about each player giving their all for their teammates, and honestly, I haven’t seen that spirit since I joined the team.”

One incident that highlighted the discord among the players occurred during a penalty awarded to Fiorentina. Moise Kean and Mandragora were seen debating who should take the penalty until captain Luca Ranieri intervened.

Vanoli revealed that the situation was worse than he had initially believed.

“Albert Gudmundsson is our designated penalty taker, but he hesitated to take the shot. Mandragora was next in line, while Kean, despite his current goal drought, was eager to step up.

“It’s time to prioritize teamwork on the pitch, recognizing that every play is crucial, whether in attack or defense. I have yet to unlock what motivates these players,” he added.

With just six points from the first 14 games, Fiorentina is pressed for time to turn their season around.

“The responsibility for change doesn’t lie with me, but with the players and the characters in this team,” Vanoli continued. “I believe there are true leaders here who must step up. We are at a critical juncture that requires growth, and we need to act swiftly.”

“My priority now is to find solutions and identify those players who are committed to fighting for this club. We cannot afford to concede such ridiculous goals.”
