Chivu: Inter Could Have…

Cristian Chivu expressed some dissatisfaction with Inter’s commanding 4-0 win against Como, stating that they “could’ve performed much better,” and downplayed the significance of facing Cesc Fabregas.

The Nerazzurri recognized this match as a significant challenge, particularly since Como was only three points behind, had gone 11 games unbeaten, and boasted the strongest defense in Serie A.

This victory turned out to be particularly remarkable, with Lautaro Martinez netting an early goal, followed by additional strikes from Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Carlos Augusto after halftime.

However, despite the impressive scoreline, Chivu appeared less than thrilled with the overall performance.

“We could’ve done much better,” Chivu remarked on DAZN Italia.

“We may have been a bit too energetic in the first half, exerting a lot of effort while pressing high. The performance showcased aggression and moments of quality, so we’re glad to secure the three points, which are crucial.”

Before the kickoff, Chivu suggested that Inter could exploit any ‘complacency’ from Como, and he elaborated on that notion.

“I wanted us to circulate the ball better, to dissect their passing channels, as we frequently appeared frantic. When they played man-to-man, we needed to move the ball quickly and connect with our teammates. We required a bit more composure to execute the right plays, which we managed to do in the second half.”

“The first 20 minutes reflected an extraordinary intensity, but we tried to take a moment to catch our breath at 1-0, and we could’ve managed the tempo better during that phase. We showed humility in allowing them to possess the ball, then sought to regain it a bit deeper before counterattacking.”

Luis Henrique made his third consecutive start across all competitions, and his patience bore fruit as he provided an excellent assist for Lautaro Martinez’s first goal.

“All 22 outfield players, including goalkeepers and those moving up from the Under-23 team, are essential to us. We must exercise patience with those transitioning from other leagues, as joining Inter can be a significant adjustment, and they can relate better with teammates who have been around for a while and can explain what it truly means to play for Inter.”

This match held extra significance for Chivu, knowing that Como’s head coach, Cesc Fabregas, had been Inter’s top choice to succeed Simone Inzaghi over the summer.

“That’s just fodder for the headlines, and it doesn’t concern me. My focus is on my team and how we can improve. It’s good for you to write stories like that, I understand.”

Chivu displayed enthusiastic celebrations on the touchline, a recurring theme for him this season.

“I can’t recall exactly what I did… I’m just the usual fool, which is fine,” he laughed as he watched the highlights.

“I truly enjoy working with this team and being part of this club, having been involved for many years, apart from that brief three-month stint at Parma which taught me a lot. Now that I’m back, I strive to give my best with passion and enthusiasm, passing that energy onto the players.”

“They understand what it means to be an Interista and to belong to this club,” Chivu concluded.

With this win, Inter temporarily sits atop the Serie A standings, awaiting the outcomes from Milan, Napoli, and Roma.
