Kicker has announced that VfL Wolfsburg has appointed a new sporting director. Pirmin Schwegler, currently serving as director of professional football at Eintracht Frankfurt, will replace the recently dismissed Sebastian Schindzielorz. Schwegler will collaborate with Wolfsburg’s managing director, Peter Christiansen, to enhance the team’s roster during the upcoming January transfer window. Currently, Wolfsburg sits in 15th place in the Bundesliga standings.
Since letting go of Schindzielorz almost a month ago, Wolfsburg has had unsuccessful attempts to secure the services of active sporting directors such as Andreas Schicker from Hoffenheim and Marcus Mann from Hannover 96. The team has also been without a head coach since parting ways with Paul Simonis shortly before Schindzielorz’s dismissal.

Interim head coach Daniel Bauer has led the team through their last three league matches. After a loss to Bayer Leverkusen and a draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, Bauer achieved a surprising 3-1 victory over Union Berlin last weekend. Depending on his ability to secure points in the final two matches before the winter break, Schwegler and Christiansen may consider keeping Bauer on as head coach.
Is Pirmin Schwegler a Good Choice?
Pirmin Schwegler is widely respected in German football administrative circles. The former Swiss international had a successful playing career at clubs like Eintracht, Leverkusen, Hoffenheim, and Hannover. Following his retirement, he served as Bayern Munich’s chief scout and later as Hoffenheim’s licensing director.
He was recruited to Eintracht by board member for sport Markus Krösche to serve as the professional football director after Krösche’s promotion from sporting director last January. Schwegler is now the third executive within Eintracht’s hierarchy, following Krösche and sporting director Timmo Hardung.
The 38-year-old spent over two years as Bayern’s chief scout from 2021 to 2023 and later worked for 19 months as Hoffenheim’s licensing and football director from 2023 to 2024. With his extensive experience and background, Schwegler is seen as a strong addition to Wolfsburg.
