1. FSV Mainz 05 has surprisingly awarded a professional contract to forward Fabio Moreno Fell. The 25-year-old was not on anyone’s radar prior to this season, and for good reason—he only joined the Bundesliga team from sixth-tier club TSV Gau-Odernheim last summer.
Born in Spain, Moreno Fell played academy football in the Pfalz region before undergoing a brief trial with the Ingolstadt reserves during the 2019/20 season. After that opportunity didn’t pan out, he returned to the Palatinate to participate in fifth and sixth-tier matches with various clubs throughout his twenties.

Thanks to some impressive performances with the Mainz reserves this year, Moreno Fell made it into a couple of matchday squads under former head coach Bo Henriksen before receiving a surprising starting opportunity from interim head coach Benjamin Hoffmann against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 13.
“Football sometimes writes special stories,” noted Mainz’s technical director Meikel Schönweitz in a statement regarding the signing. “It’s extraordinary to see a player in the Verbandsliga in Gau-Odernheim in the spring and then watch him compete in the Bundesliga by the end of the year.”
“Fabio has consistently shown his qualities since the start of the season, and being a grounded individual, he is completely focused on his responsibilities,” Schönweitz continued. “We are thrilled to have him continue wearing the 05 jersey as we support his development.”
Moreno Fell himself expressed gratitude, stating, “I can continue to grow here under optimal conditions and am very thankful for the trust and experience I have already gained with the professionals. This has allowed me to fulfill a dream. Now it’s up to me to remain on this path and keep working hard.”
