Goals from Patrick Agyemang and Liam Thompson’s first Championship strike propelled Derby to a comfortable victory against bottom-placed Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
Agyemang took advantage of an error from the Wednesday defense to score midway through the first half, giving the Rams an early lead. Thompson expanded the advantage shortly after the interval.

Agyemang netted his second goal in the 62nd minute following a half-hearted clearance from Rhian Brewster, effectively sealing the game in Derby’s favor.
Sheffield Wednesday, who remain 29 points adrift of safety after having 18 points deducted, could only manage one shot on target in another disappointing performance.
The Owls have now gone 14 matches without a victory and were fortunate not to suffer an even heavier defeat.
Meanwhile, Derby has climbed to 12th place in the league table, securing only their second win in six matches and sitting four points shy of the playoff spots.
After initially taking time to assert themselves, Derby capitalized on Wednesday’s attempts to play from the back.

Thompson intercepted a stray pass and passed it to Bobby Clark, who found Agyemang in the box. The striker shifted his weight skillfully to create space past Dom Iorfa and fired a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
Clark nearly made it two shortly after, but Wednesday captain Barry Bannan made a brave header to clear Ben Brereton Diaz’s cross.
Another opportunity followed when the hosts were caught in possession deep in their half, but Clark’s shot from the edge of the area sailed over the bar.
Derby continued to dominate after the break; a free-kick from Craig Forsyth was headed down to Thompson, who controlled it well, created space, and shot low into the bottom-left corner.

The third goal soon came as Wednesday lost possession once again. Brewster’s strength won a ball down the left, and his low cross was only half-cleared, allowing Agyemang to finish from close range.
Despite nearly half an hour left, the third goal prompted many Wednesday fans to leave the stadium early.
They missed their side’s only chance when Bannan set up Svante Ingelsson, who turned and fired a powerful left-footed shot that was saved by Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
Derby could have further extended their lead as Wednesday struggled, but they failed to capitalize on their chances. A strong save from Pierce Charles against Kayden Jackson late in the game helped keep the score respectable.

As for the league table, it’s a grim sight for Owls fans. They remain on -9 points with just one league win all season and have conceded 40 goals in 20 matches.
New ownership is still being sought, as they have been in administration since October and have yet to appoint a preferred bidder.
‘Confidence went’ – Sheff Wed reaction
Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield:
“We started well and were more dominant on the ball, but we discussed the need to play direct. If they are more physical, we should challenge them on the ground.
“However, we played too much on the front side and not enough behind their defense. The few times we did get in behind, we were more dangerous.

“We kept pushing in the second half, but after their second goal, the confidence drained from the players and we fell away.”
‘We controlled the game’ – Derby reaction
Derby County head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:
“I thought it was a fantastic result, especially given how tough the game was. Watford was excellent last week, so it’s very satisfying to come here and secure a win.
“In the first half, we got into some great positions after turnovers, and it was disappointing that we weren’t more clinical. The game should have been out of reach by halftime, but it was pleasing to come out, score those two goals, and control the game in the second half.”
