Real Betis withstands Rayo…

Rayo Vallecano 0-0 Real Betis

After both teams secured important victories in European competitions on Thursday night, Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis faced each other on Monday, but fatigue was evident. Both clubs are vying for European qualification for the next season, with their sights increasingly set on the Conference League and Europa League.

The match started slowly, with both Diego Llorente from Betis and Jorge de Frutos suffering injuries, the latter visibly distressed as he left the pitch in tears. Eventually, Rayo began to find their rhythm, with Pacha Espino coming close to scoring from the back post, though he couldn’t connect with the opportunity.

About 30 minutes into the match, Rayo was presented with a prime chance to take the lead, but Isi Palazon’s shot was easily saved by Alvaro Valles, as it was neither aimed well nor powerful enough. Inigo Perez could only watch in disbelief as the ball, tantalizingly hovering in front of an open goal, was not converted by any of Isi, Nobel Mendy, or Alvaro Garcia, who collided in their attempts to finish.

The game was slow to gain momentum again, but after the hour mark, Rayo found themselves in better form, forcing Marc Bartra and Natan into more defensive actions. Rayo struck the post with just 20 minutes left to play. Despite this pressure, Betis remained a threat, managing four shots on target and testing August Batalla.

However, Rayo dominated with twelve shots, applying significant pressure late in the match. Yet, the feeling that they might never find the back of the net for the evening solidified as the final whistle blew.

While Rayo is five points behind the 7th position—currently in 13th place—they are just three points clear of the relegation zone after this weekend’s wins for RCD Mallorca and Girona, despite a commendable performance. This means their winless streak in La Liga extends to six matches, of which only two were losses. Betis, on the other hand, was satisfied with the draw, keeping them in 6th position, five points off Espanyol and a further four behind Atletico Madrid in 4th.
