Liverpool Sign £60m…

Liverpool commemorated their Premier League title last season, with Virgil van Dijk at the helm as captain.

The club is also looking to secure a new contract for their captain, extending his stay at Anfield until 2027. At 34, Van Dijk continues to set the benchmark in Arne Slot’s defense and has recently been named in The Best FIFA Men’s 11 for 2025.

However, given his age, the £75m defender won’t be around forever, and it would be a surprise if he were to agree to another extension beyond 2027. This means Liverpool will need to find a long-term replacement for the Dutchman soon.

Liverpool Must Name a New Captain

One candidate could be Marc Guehi, but Liverpool also seems interested in Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck.

When Van Dijk leaves, there will also be a need for a new club captain.

Since assuming the captaincy after Jordan Henderson’s departure in 2023, Van Dijk has skillfully guided the Reds to last season’s title. Liverpool currently have a player poised to take the captain’s role after Van Dijk.

According to a report from The Athletic, Dominik Szoboszlai is seen as the ideal candidate to lead Liverpool in the future.

Szoboszlai’s Presence Sets Him Apart

“As the captain of the Hungary national team, he has the look of a future Liverpool captain due to his on-field presence, adaptability, and availability,” the report states.

“Szoboszlai possesses an aura that distinguishes him and enables him to connect with various personalities within the squad; he is among the few players who have formed a close friendship with Salah.

“While he may not be as vocal or media-friendly as Van Dijk, he has shown he can handle pressure and rise to the occasion when necessary.”

Szoboszlai’s Contract Runs Until 2028

Szoboszlai, 25, signed with Liverpool for £60m from RB Leipzig in 2023. He was one of the standout performers last season during the title-winning campaign and has continued to elevate his game this season.

Currently sidelined due to injury, Liverpool is eager for Szoboszlai to recover as soon as possible. His contract extends until 2028, and discussions for a new deal between Richard Hughes and his representative are reportedly on the agenda.

A new contract would solidify his role in Liverpool’s midfield for years to come, with the likelihood of him donning the captain’s armband starting in 2027.
