Real Madrid triumphed over Talavera on Wednesday, though the performance was less than convincing. The team secured a 3-2 victory courtesy of two goals from Kylian Mbappe and an own goal. While the win is what matters most in the Copa del Rey, it may not bolster Xabi Alonso’s position as manager.
Things could have taken a turn for the worse if not for an exceptional save by Andriy Lunin in stoppage time, preventing Talavera from equalizing. After the match, the Ukrainian goalkeeper addressed the media and, according to Marca, he was asked whether his save had saved Alonso’s job by keeping the game from going to extra time.
“I don’t view it that way. This is my job; I’ve been doing it since I was young. It’s my responsibility to help the team and always be prepared. I’m not aware of anyone doubting Xabi; we have full faith in our coach. We are a united group, and we all stand together. I don’t know who harbors doubts—whether it’s the fans or the media—but ultimately we focus on our work.”

Lunin discusses differences between Alonso and Ancelotti
Lunin also shared his thoughts on the differences between Alonso’s current approach and that of former coach Carlo Ancelotti.
“Each coach has a unique style. Ancelotti had greater experience, having won everything in his career, while Xabi is younger. Everyone respects him; there are ongoing developments, and it’s a normal phase of adaptation and change.”
It remains to be seen how Real Madrid’s higher-ups will respond to Alonso’s situation following the performance against Talavera. Alonso is expected to lead the team in Saturday’s La Liga match at home against Sevilla, but a disappointing result in that game could spell trouble for the former Bayer Leverkusen head coach.
