Last summer, Liverpool opted against bringing in a left-wing option for the squad following Luis Diaz’s departure.
The Colombian winger enjoyed a standout season with the Premier League champions before moving to Bayern Munich for £65 million.

Post-Diaz transfer, Cody Gakpo was made the primary choice for the position, and Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, chose not to pursue any additional signings in that area.
The rationale was that Rio Ngumoha would gain valuable experience without another senior player congesting his path.
The 17-year-old was acquired from Chelsea’s academy in summer 2024 and quickly became a consideration for Arne Slot’s first team.

At the start of the season, Ngumoha netted his first Premier League goal, making him Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer, and subsequently signed his first professional contract.

Ngumoha Facing Limited First-Team Opportunities
However, his progress has recently stalled, with first-team opportunities becoming rare. Ngumoha has not featured for Liverpool since November and has only accumulated 42 minutes in the Premier League this season.
Given that Gakpo is currently sidelined with an injury, it was anticipated that Ngumoha would receive more playing time. Instead, Slot has opted for a narrower midfield approach, utilizing Florian Wirtz on the left flank.
Frustratingly for Ngumoha, his only recent minutes came during an under-21 friendly, as he remains on the periphery of the senior squad. Slot confirmed on Tuesday ahead of the Premier League clash with Wolves on December 27 that this situation is unlikely to improve.

Slot effectively acknowledged that Ngumoha is now fourth in the pecking order for Liverpool’s left side, behind Gakpo, Wirtz, and Federico Chiesa.
Slot: Ngumoha’s Current Position
“As I mentioned last time, for his age—if I’m correct, he’s 17—he likely has the most minutes of all 17-year-olds in the Premier League, which demonstrates how special it is for someone that young to have that playing time,” Slot stated.
“It also reflects his quality since such playing time is uncommon for a 17-year-old. However, it also highlights the competition for spots in that area.
“For the upcoming weekend, I don’t see that position as a major concern. Hopefully, Cody [Gakpo] returns; otherwise, Federico [Chiesa] or Florian [Wirtz] can step in there.
“If he played in a different position, his chances could increase. It’s similar for all players. In the recent match against Tottenham, I had four U21 players on the bench, which increases his chances of being called upon. So, we’ll see.”
