Ivory Coast kicked off their title defense in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a narrow 1-0 win over Mozambique on Wednesday.
From the start, Ivory Coast controlled the game, although Mozambique managed the first shot on target, with Yahia Fofana blocking Geny Catamo’s effort.

The defending champions created their first significant opportunity in the 26th minute when Guela Doue sent in a cross, but Yan Diomande misfired with his shot.
Amad Diallo then sent a shot over the bar following a corner from Diomande, as the Elephants ramped up their pressure.
Shortly afterward, the Manchester United player made it to the byline and delivered a superb cross, but Ghislain was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Before halftime, Franck Kessie squandered a chance when the ball fell to him after a defensive error by Ernan, but he directed his header straight at the goalkeeper.
Kessie redeemed himself shortly after the break by providing the assist for the opening goal. He headed Guela Doue’s cross to Amad Diallo, who scored his first-ever AFCON goal.

Kessie later missed another great opportunity, heading wide from a precise cross by Konan.
Vakoun Bayo also failed to extend Ivory Coast’s lead when he rose to meet a cross but sent his attempt off target with the goalkeeper firmly in place.
In the dying moments, Geny Catamo nearly equalized for Mozambique, but Fofana made a spectacular save to maintain Ivory Coast’s advantage and secure the win.
