Since his debut in March, Real Madrid’s summer signing Dean Huijsen has quickly become a regular for the Spanish national team. From March to October, he played every minute for La Roja under manager Luis de la Fuente until an injury forced him to withdraw from the squad.
However, his situation has changed recently, as he missed Spain’s last three matches due to injury. During his absence, Aymeric Laporte, a player highly regarded by De la Fuente, has regained prominence within the national team.
Huijsen’s World Cup Position in Jeopardy
According to MARCA, Huijsen’s spot in the Spain squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup may now be at risk. The coach is set to announce the roster on May 25, which is expected to include four centre-backs, while five players are vying for those positions.

Among the five competing for a spot, Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand are largely expected to be chosen as De la Fuente’s preferred centre-back pairing. This leaves Huijsen in contention for the final two roster spots alongside Dani Vivian and Pau Cubarsi, with other contenders like Aitor Paredes and Cristhian Mosquera also in the mix.
Given the stiff competition, Huijsen’s inclusion in Spain’s World Cup squad is uncertain, especially considering his recent performances. After a promising start to the season, his form has dipped, with reports suggesting that fatigue might be a contributing factor.
Therefore, Huijsen will need to elevate his game significantly in the latter half of the season, not only to help Real Madrid achieve success but also to secure his place on the Spain squad for the World Cup.
