Barcelona is gearing up to sign at least one defender as the winter transfer window opens later this week. Due to injuries to Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo’s leave of absence, the club has expedited its plans to acquire a center-back, with the possibility of adding a full-back as well.
The squad under Hansi Flick currently lacks depth at both right-back and left-back. Jules Kounde is the only natural right-back, while Alejandro Balde occupies the left, especially with Gerard Martin now playing centrally. Therefore, there is a potential need for a new full-back addition.

Flick has previously expressed a desire for a right-back, and his wish may soon be addressed. Recent reports from Saudi Arabia (via Sport) suggest that Barcelona is considering a January move for Joao Cancelo.

Cancelo is eager to leave Al Hilal after falling out of favor under manager Simone Inzaghi. He aims to secure a spot in Portugal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, and competing in Europe’s top five leagues would enhance his chances.
Barcelona has positive views on Cancelo
Cancelo spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Barcelona, and despite some notable struggles, he is fondly remembered by sporting director Deco. A deal could be feasible if Al Hilal agrees to cover most of his wages, as Barcelona has limited space in their salary budget.

Flick’s highly attacking style could be more suitable for Cancelo than the system employed by Xavi Hernandez, making the prospect of re-signing the 31-year-old potentially beneficial for Barcelona. However, any move would hinge on financial viability, which is uncertain.
