Following a last-minute defeat to Fulham on Saturday, West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo expressed that circumstances were working against his team.

He may still feel that way just three days later, as the Hammers’ setbacks were largely self-inflicted during their 2-2 draw with Brighton.

Jarrod Bowen’s composed goal against the flow of play could have been a turning point, bringing him level with Michail Antonio for the most combined goals and assists in Premier League history for the club, both sitting at 101.

However, Max Kilman gave away a penalty with a reckless last-minute challenge, and Lucas Paqueta’s tackle resembled something more suited for the NFL.

West Ham was fortunate to be penalized just once, although fortune was not on their side when Alphonse Areola mishandled a corner 16 minutes into the second half.

There are indeed some positives to note – Callum Wilson and Bowen combined effectively in attack, and 20-year-old left-back Ollie Scarles showed resilience after his earlier error against Fulham.

Nevertheless, with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest losing at home to Everton, this opportunity to close the gap to safety was missed.

West Ham urgently needs to address their defensive errors before it becomes too late.
