Kalvin Phillips’ potential transfer from Manchester City to Wolves in January depends on a crucial condition, according to recent reports.
The 30-year-old midfielder has faced significant challenges since joining Manchester City from his boyhood club, Leeds United, for a substantial fee in the summer of 2022. Signed by Pep Guardiola to provide backup for Rodri, Phillips has struggled to make an impact due to injuries and the impressive form of the Spanish international.

In his first season with the club, Phillips only featured in 12 Premier League matches, accumulating just 291 minutes of play. His performances in cup competitions were also less than inspiring, including a notably poor display in his initial start for Manchester City against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, shortly after Guardiola publicly expressed concerns about his fitness following the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The first half of the 2023-24 season did not improve for Phillips, as he found himself sidelined from Guardiola’s squad and subsequently loaned to West Ham in January 2024. His limited playing time over the past year and a half became evident, leading to mistakes in key moments and his eventual exclusion from the starting lineup at the London club.
Last season, Kieran McKenna and Ipswich Town provided Phillips with another opportunity. He registered the highest number of appearances in a single season since leaving Leeds, but was unable to secure a permanent move after Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League.

There was speculation about a possible return to Leeds last summer, following their promotion back to the Premier League, but Phillips was hindered by yet another injury, preventing any transfer from happening.
According to Joe Donnohue of Four Four Two, Phillips is eager to return to Elland Road this January, but manager Daniel Farke appears satisfied with his current midfield options after signing Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff during the summer.
As a result, a transfer to Wolves seems to be Phillips’ best chance to reignite his career after what he considers a regrettable decision to move to Manchester City. However, he must first demonstrate his fitness to facilitate a potential switch to Molineux.
Wolves are currently struggling in the 2025-26 season and are at significant risk of relegation; nevertheless, manager Rob Edwards is determined to enhance his squad in the January transfer window. Reports suggest that Edwards is interested in signing Phillips on loan to strengthen his midfield, especially after utilizing Jhon Arias in an unconventional central midfield role.

With the recent rise of Matheus Mane as a viable option in Wolves’ first team, the transfer may take some time to finalize. Nonetheless, this could be Phillips’ last opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League.
Under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2028, Manchester City’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, is likely to seek to reduce Phillips’ salary from the wage bill while also trying to recoup some funds for the club’s out-of-favor player. Strong performances from Phillips in the upcoming months could therefore benefit both the player and Manchester City.
