When it comes to excitement, Newcastle United refuses to do things the easy way. A mere 40 games in a season? That’s not our style!

Need a standard 90-minute match? Not for the Magpies! We crave the thrill of extra time and penalties, leaving every senior player exhausted and shivering as they prepare for another match just days later.

And what is this weekend about? It’s about hope! Hope that could grow even more as we face Manchester City this week in yet another League Cup semi-final.

I’m serving up optimism alongside a dash of “oh dear, what’s next?” After I wrote about Fabian Schar’s 250th game last week, he suffered a serious ankle injury in the very next match.

On Saturday, Tino Livramento joined the injured ranks with a hamstring injury, leaving us thin on defensive options.

Fortunately, we have Lewis Miley, who seems capable of playing in almost any position and has been holding down the defense well. However, I’m concerned about our defensive depth. In retrospect, our transfer window strategy appears to have been insufficient.

While we seemed to strengthen our squad on paper, the reality tells a different story. With a hectic January and February schedule ahead, including an FA Cup match, we find ourselves in a precarious situation, relying on nearly all of our senior players for every match. This approach is unsustainable, leading to fatigue and increased risk of injuries.

As a Newcastle fan, it’s an exciting time with momentum swinging in our favor. I just hope we use the remaining time in this transfer window to secure a defensive option that will allow us to compete effectively across all our tournaments.
