Barcelona Sporting…

Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona, gave an interview to El Larguero shortly after Barcelona’s victory in the Spanish Super Cup and only hours after Real Madrid announced the dismissal of Xabi Alonso.

Given the context, it was natural for Deco to be questioned about the situation unfolding at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Although Deco’s interview primarily centered on Barcelona, he did address the significant changes currently taking place at Real Madrid.

What did he say?

The Barça sporting director provided his perspective on what has become a shocking decision in Spanish football.

When asked about Alonso’s termination, he expressed surprise, noting the timing considering the current season’s progress.

“Honestly, it caught me off guard. He hasn’t been in the role long. He’s just getting started.

“They’re competing in the Champions League and are only four points behind Barça in La Liga.”

“We understand the complexities of Barça-Madrid matches; they create pressure, and the coaches often bear the brunt of it.”

Deco was also inquired about Alvaro Arbeloa, who has been named the interim replacement. Instead of commenting on Arbeloa’s qualifications, Deco chose to remain diplomatic, refraining from delving into Madrid’s internal decisions.

“I’m not familiar with his coaching abilities. In situations like this, I prefer to concentrate on our own efforts and see how it unfolds,” he stated.

The discussion then shifted to a tactical comparison between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Deco observed recent shifts in Madrid’s approach, particularly during their match against Atletico Madrid.

“I have noticed Madrid adopting a more counter-attacking style. They effectively used the speed of Vini and Rodrygo against Atlético.

“We prefer not to overly focus on the opposition. Our football philosophy is clear: we aim to control the game. Since Hansi’s arrival, we’re committed to that idea.”
