Sandy Baltimore made the first significant attempt for Chelsea, but her shot was deflected wide by Kerstin Casparij.

At the other end, Khadija Shaw and Vivianne Miedema combined effectively to create an opportunity for Manchester City, but the ball ultimately found its way to Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

Shaw had a missed chance shortly after, failing to capitalize on an open goal after rounding Hampton, thanks to Baltimore’s quick recovery.

Baltimore was instrumental for Chelsea, delivering a cross to Sam Kerr, whose header narrowly missed the target.

All of Chelsea’s efforts were rewarded in the 41st minute as Kaptein scored the opening goal. Baltimore provided a cross from the right, and Kaptein, unmarked, headed the ball past Ayaka Yamashita.

Manchester City responded by applying pressure, with Miedema’s shot hitting the post and Casparij experiencing a similar fate soon after.

The Cityzens continued to attack, forcing Casparij to deliver a cross that Miedema couldn’t convert with her header. Shaw then connected with a cross from Lauren Hemp, but her header was tipped over the bar by Hampton. Yui Hasegawa also tried her luck, but once again, Hampton was there to protect Chelsea’s lead.

Baltimore made a late attempt to extend Chelsea’s advantage, curling a shot towards Yamashita as the final whistle blew, with the game ending at 1-0.

Chelsea is set to face Manchester United in this season’s Subway Women’s League Cup final on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
