“I came here with deep respect. I have a connection to Marseille as it’s a unique place, but many journalists here, not all, seem to act like they are in charge, and I don’t have any masters,” De Zerbi mentioned in a statement to Gazzetta.

“Write whatever you wish. Some approach me with genuine intent, while others do not. When intentions are sincere, I stay silent, but I believe my nationality influences some of your perceptions. I’m proud to be Italian and have always shown respect and openness. Some believe they have authority here, but I answer only to my employer, Franck McCourt, who isn’t French either.”
In support of their coach, Marseille issued an official statement: “Our communication is structured within a framework of collective governance, guided by the management. The club neither practices boycott nor censorship. Decisions align with the strategies set forth by the club based on contextual analysis, treatment, and respect for the institution.”

“The club expects all journalists to adhere to ethical standards and reserves the right to respond appropriately to any accusations that might damage its reputation or that of its personnel.”

In his first season with Marseille, De Zerbi secured a second-place finish with 65 points, finishing 19 points behind league champions PSG.
