Smyth opened the scoring for Thistle just before half-time, benefiting from a strong run by Tony Watt. However, St. Johnstone showed greater determination in the second half, taking the lead with a deflected strike from Alfie Agyeman and a brilliant low shot by Josh McPake.
As they sought a third goal to solidify their position at the top, St. Johnstone faced a dramatic late twist when Cheick Diabate fouled Thistle striker Alex Samuel in the dying moments of stoppage time. This provided Smyth with a crucial penalty opportunity.
Despite Toby Steward diving in the right direction, the on-loan St Mirren midfielder expertly placed the ball into the bottom corner, igniting celebrations among the travelling Thistle fans.
St Johnstone still holds a game in hand and maintains a two-point lead over Mark Wilson’s team.
