Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy expressed concerns about the declining standards of officiating in League One after his team’s impressive 10-man win against Rotherham on Saturday.

Despite captain Ryan Wintle receiving a red card in the 21st minute, his teammates managed to secure a 3-0 away victory, keeping them atop the league standings.

Barry-Murphy not only criticized the officiating by referee Seb Stockbridge but also commented on the overall quality of referees in the division, suggesting it may be linked to Cardiff being the only Welsh club in League One.

“Refereeing performances this season have been steadily declining. It’s really been quite poor,” he told BBC Sport Wales.

“As the only Welsh team in this league, our players deserve protection, but they’re not receiving it.”

The head coach was particularly frustrated by Wintle’s red card and a challenge on Cardiff’s Isaak Davies that went unnoticed.

“Ryan made contact, and there wasn’t much cover, but [Stockbridge] was quick to show the red card,” he stated.

“Isaak Davies took a nasty hit to the head off the ball, and it went unseen.”

Barry-Murphy also lamented the lack of response from Professional Game Match Official Limited (PGMOL), the organization responsible for refereeing in English professional football, regarding their past complaints.

He described the responses as “vanilla,” asserting, “Our staff have put a lot of effort into those reports, but from now on, it’s pointless.”

“There’s no acknowledgment of our concerns; they’re simply ignored. We receive replies, but they always endorse the decisions made. It’s not acceptable.”

“We won’t waste time on this anymore; our focus will be on supporting Cardiff City and ensuring our players and fans receive the protection they deserve.”

Bluebirds’ Mentality Impressed Boss

The win over Rotherham marked Cardiff’s 10th consecutive unbeaten match, maintaining a two-point lead over Lincoln City.

“From the very start, we aimed to play our game, and that continued even after Ryan’s dismissal,” Barry-Murphy noted.

“I was confident in our victory, but what stood out was the mentality showed by the players; they didn’t let anyone down.

“We were determined not to take a backward step. We want to be as aggressive as possible in every moment and every game in this league. It was truly a special day for us.”
