Liverpool on the Brink of a £50 Million Setback

Missing out on Champions League qualification has numerous repercussions, particularly regarding player transfers, with the most significant impact being financial.

According to UEFA’s financial reports for the 2024/25 season, Liverpool earned €98.1 million (~£85m) for finishing at the top of the league phase and advancing to the round of 16.

In contrast, Tottenham received just €41.4 million (~£36m) for clinching the Europa League title.

If the season were to conclude now, Liverpool would only secure a spot in the Europa League.

This means that even with a Europa League win, the Reds would still face a near £50 million deficit based on last year’s earnings.

With their team having qualified for the round of 16 again, they are likely to receive a similar payout as last season, but failing to qualify for the Champions League in the current campaign could have long-lasting negative effects on the club.

Currently undergoing a transitional phase, Liverpool is expected to pursue more high-profile signings in upcoming transfer windows. However, a season spent in the Europa League would significantly hinder their progress.

Previously, during their last stint in the Europa League, they reached the quarter-finals, with Lazio being the highest earning team eliminated at that stage last season, receiving €24.2 million (~£21m).

Upcoming UEFA financial figures will underscore the necessity for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League, as the future of their rebuild lies in the balance.
