The Wigan Warriors secured a convincing 34-6 victory over Hull FC, marking their second straight win to open the 2026 Super League season.

Wigan raced to a 24-point lead by halftime, scoring four tries without response as they aimed to reclaim the Super League title from Hull KR.

Sam Walters, Zach Eckersley, Sam Eseh, and Jai Field each added to the scoreline, effectively sealing the match before the break.

Despite their earlier victory over Bradford Bulls, Hull struggled and could only respond with a late consolation try from Harvie Hill after Wigan further extended their lead with tries from Bevan French and a second try from Field.

Wigan quickly established control with a well-placed kick to the right corner, where Eckersley contested effectively and Walters was on hand to dive in for the opening try in the fifth minute.

Eckersley soon turned scorer himself, finishing off a slick Warriors move at the right corner as Hull found it hard to handle the hosts’ energetic start.

Field appeared to have scored shortly after, breaking through a missed tackle, but his effort was disallowed by the video referee due to an obstruction in the buildup.

The visitors contributed to their own struggles when Harvey Barron dropped the ball in front of the goalposts, allowing former Hull loanee Eseh to capitalize and score from close range.

A brilliant sidestep by Field created a gap in Hull’s defense, enabling him to score Wigan’s fourth try.

Just four minutes into the second half, French slipped through a weak challenge to touch down, with Adam Keighran adding the extra points comfortably.

Wigan maintained their momentum, with Liam Marshall attempting to set up captain Farrell for a try, only for Arthur Romano to intercept the pass.

Hull’s Liam Knight received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle with ten minutes left, and Wigan quickly scored their sixth try when Keighran juggled the ball to Field, who scored his second.

The match saw Keighran also sent to the sin-bin for a late hit on Pryce, and Hull finally crossed the line as former Wigan player Hill scored, preventing Wigan from keeping a clean sheet.

The game concluded on a concerning note, with Pryce suffering a potential knee injury and being assisted off the field.

‘We’re not getting carried away’ – Peet

Wigan head coach Matt Peet shared with Sky Sports:

“I’m pleased with the result and certain aspects of our performance. We could definitely improve, and we will, but I would have happily taken this result before the match started.

“We executed some good plays. It’s crucial not to overreact, but there were positive signs on both sides of the ball, especially in the first half.

“We could have managed the game better towards the end—just a bit more discipline and fewer turnovers to improve upon for our next game.”

‘We just weren’t up to it’ – Cartwright

Hull FC head coach John Cartwright commented to BBC Radio Humberside:

“From the very start, we faced challenges. They performed exceptionally well while we fell short.

“Right from the first whistle, we allowed them to move down the field too easily. I share in the responsibility for this, just as much as the players do. For some reason, we just didn’t meet the challenge.”

On Liam Knight’s yellow card: “That was a foolish mistake. It’s definitely something I’ll discuss with Liam. On a scale of stupidity, it’s probably a 10.”

On Will Pryce’s injury: “The doctor has examined him. Currently, the situation seems hopeful that it’s not serious, but it’s too early to determine. We’ll conduct scans to get a clearer picture.”
