Laporta reveals truth…

The discussion surrounding Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona continues to be a hot topic, with Joan Laporta providing his insights once more.

During an appearance on the Catalan show ‘Café d’Idees’ on 2 CAT (h/t SPORT), the Barcelona presidential candidate discussed the emotional and contentious moments surrounding the legendary Argentine’s exit in 2021 and the unsuccessful attempt to bring him back in 2023.

Laporta acknowledged his inability to stop Messi from joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and to facilitate his return two years later.

What’s the story?

When directly asked whether Messi could end his career at Barcelona, Laporta clarified the circumstances from 2023.

He stated that “an attempt was made in 2023, but Messi chose to go to Inter Miami for several reasons.”

The pre-candidate emphasized that “this was his decision, which is very respectable” and wanted to ensure it didn’t come across as “a criticism.”

Laporta also reflected on the shared legacy between the club and its greatest player.

“Messi contributed immensely to Barça, and Barça contributed a lot to Messi,” he remarked, highlighting that in his opinion, “He deserves a tribute match, which could not take place because of how things unfolded.”

“He has been such an iconic player, the best in the world, and deserves a statue alongside Kubala and Cruyff. If you push me, Ronaldinho can find a spot there as well,” he added.

“Messi has been the best,” he reiterated.

A troubled relationship

However, the relationship has faced its challenges. Laporta described it as “strained” following the failure to renew Messi’s contract, stating,

“The circumstances were favorable for a move to PSG. It was a highly appealing offer, but I believe he wanted to remain here.”

He further confessed, “We made efforts, but Barça’s financial situation couldn’t accommodate it. There’s always room for improvement, even when circumstances are dire.”

Beyond Messi, Laporta also discussed his current campaign and his vision for the club’s future.

He suggested that coach Hansi Flick “feels more at ease with my continued presidency.”

“He attended the book presentation, confirming our mutual understanding,” he noted.
