Exploring Carrick: An Analysis

Exploring Carrick: An Analysis

This moment was always on the horizon.

The unpredictability of this Premier League season has made it clear that Manchester United’s unbeaten streak couldn’t last indefinitely.

Michael Carrick has impressively taken charge so far, but now he must demonstrate his ability to revitalize a team that has recently struggled.

While this loss wasn’t as disheartening as the defeat to ten-man Everton at Old Trafford back in November under Ruben Amorim, it was still disappointing, and that cannot be overlooked.

The visitors failed to assert themselves and once again ceded control to their opponents. It took far too long for them to start playing with urgency.

For Carrick, the challenges seem to stem from several smaller issues rather than a major tactical flaw, unlike during Amorim’s tenure.

In the match against Crystal Palace, the full-backs struggled to provide attacking support, and against Newcastle, there was a complete lack of connection between midfield and attack.

Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were largely uninvolved, Benjamin Sesko barely featured, and captain Bruno Fernandes’ frustrations were evident in how often he spent time arguing with the officials. Kobbie Mainoo didn’t do enough to stabilize the midfield either.

Manchester United nearly lost their unbeaten record under Carrick against West Ham, only for Sesko to rescue a draw deep into stoppage time. But that streak is now over.

They will face Aston Villa next at Old Trafford on March 15. Carrick has time to address the concerns, and a victory could secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, while a loss may raise further doubts about his long-term suitability for the role.
