Jacob Ramsey received a red card during first-half stoppage time for diving to earn a penalty against Senne Lammens, having already received a yellow card for a foul on Casemiro earlier in the half. Just two minutes later, Newcastle was awarded a penalty when Bruno Fernandes made contact with Anthony Gordon’s knee inside the box. Gordon successfully converted the penalty five minutes into stoppage time. However, Manchester United equalized almost immediately when Casemiro headed in Fernandes’ free kick shortly after the 45-minute mark.
Newcastle looked more likely to score early in the second half, but Manchester United soon found their rhythm, coming closest to a winning goal in the 75th minute when Leny Yoro’s clear header was remarkably saved by Aaron Ramsdale. This set the stage for Osula, who elegantly maneuvered past Tyrell Malacia and curled the ball around Harry Maguire and Lammens, placing it just inside the far post. It was a breathtaking and unexpected goal.
Following this defeat, Manchester United (51 points) remains in third place in the Premier League table, now just three points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool (5th and 6th places) as they vie for UEFA Champions League qualification. Newcastle (39 points) rises to 12th and is just one point behind local rivals Sunderland with nine matches still to play.

Prior to this matchup, the Red Devils arrived at St. James’ Park following an impressive run of 19 points out of 21 under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. They had drawn their last three matches under Ruben Amorim and hadn’t lost in the league since December 21, 2025, against Aston Villa. That unbeaten run began with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. The Magpies had a strong rebound, winning three consecutive Premier League matches, but over the last six weeks, they have struggled nearly as much as Manchester United has thrived.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side has managed only one win in Premier League play since January 7, suffering five losses, including three at St. James’ Park, which had been a stronghold for much of the season. Their next six games span three different competitions and will be a severe challenge for a team missing star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Magpies face Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, Chelsea, Barcelona again, and local rivals Sunderland before March 22.
