Leeds United Star Frozen…

Recent insights from the French publication FootMercato reveal a notable decline in Illan Meslier’s status at Leeds United. Since January, there has been increasing speculation regarding the French keeper’s future, particularly after Sport Witness noted interest from clubs in La Liga and AC Milan. Although the Serie A giants secured Mike Maignan with a new contract, Meslier finds himself in a professional stalemate.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has virtually vanished from the lineup under Daniel Farke, failing to make a single appearance this season. Farke’s decision to bench him in March 2025 seems to have permanently damaged the relationship between the player and the club.

Once a pivotal figure in Leeds’ resurgence under Marcelo Bielsa, he now finds himself sidelined. With his contract expiring this June, he is expected to leave without any transfer fee, potentially returning to his former club, Lorient.

Is Leeds United’s Approach Beneficial for Meslier?

Currently, Meslier ranks as the third-choice goalkeeper, trailing behind Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri, while Leeds sits only a few places above the relegation zone in 15th in the Premier League. His statistics for the year are non-existent since he has not played for the first team, only stepping in for the Under-21s to maintain some sharpness.

Previously heralded for his size and left-footed prowess as a 1.97m goalkeeper, his market value has plummeted from €22m to just €12m.

From Leeds’ perspective, keeping a former France Under-21 international on the bench while his transfer market value diminishes reflects poor squad management. Although he has occasionally struggled with focus or handling, his reactions still surpass those of many backups. Farke evidently places more trust in Darlow’s reliability. However, Leeds stands to gain nothing from a transfer now that they missed the opportunity to sell him while he still had value.

While the club may not need a discontented Meslier, they certainly could have benefited financially from a transfer. Expect him to sign a pre-contract with a team in France or Turkey soon, marking the silent end of a once-promising chapter in his career.
