The Blues face a daunting challenge in narrowing Arsenal’s seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, and the title race could take an unexpected turn when the two teams meet in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in a few weeks.
Prior to Manchester City’s FA Cup fifth-round triumph over Newcastle, Guardiola elaborated on his expectations for midfielder Rayan Cherki in the months ahead.
“Our best performance in this stadium” – Pep Guardiola praises the ‘incredible’ display by Manchester City against Newcastle United.
What does Pep Guardiola envision for Rayan Cherki at Manchester City?
Cherki has quickly become a key playmaker in his debut season at the Etihad Stadium after joining from Lyon for £34 million last summer.

However, at 22 years old, the French international still has significant potential for growth. Guardiola described how Cherki can realize his full capability at Manchester City.
“With Rayan (Cherki), I want his talent to shine! My only request is that he plays 10 meters further up the pitch. I’m not concerned about his position relative to Rodri or Erling. He was integral in the first goal against Nottingham Forest because he was close to them,” Guardiola explained.
“His assist for Rayan Aït-Nouri against Leeds came when he was near the box. I want him to live in that area. He can do whatever he likes there because he’s remarkable. That’s what I ask. He tends to drift a bit deeper, but he’s young. His impact and numbers during his first season in the Premier League have been impressive.”

“I’m thrilled with what he contributes and how hard he’s trying. We always encourage our players to improve for the benefit of the team,” Guardiola commented on Cherki.
“He listens and is eager to develop. I’m genuinely impressed by how open he is to learning – but I want to see his talent utilized in the final third because it’s exceptional. He possesses vision and passing ability – he reminds me of Kevin (De Bruyne)! When I played Kevin, I preferred him near the box, not in the right-back position. Although it’s challenging due to the limited space, he has the skill to find those tight areas and showcase his talent.”
Does Pep Guardiola see Rayan Cherki as Kevin De Bruyne’s successor at Manchester City?
Cherki was a significant signing for Manchester City’s new director of football, Hugo Viana, last summer.

Guardiola has discussed whether Cherki is comparable to De Bruyne or more like Phil Foden in style.
“When we don’t have the ball and can’t string together two or three passes, I like Rayan Cherki to drop deep,” the Catalan manager mentioned. “I also appreciate when the forwards come back to help. However, in situations like against Nottingham Forest, where they sit in a mid-block or deeper waiting for us, it’s essential to be positioned to win the ball. If we lose it there, it’s fine because we have cover behind. It’s just common sense – nothing too complicated.”
With the potential to evolve into a world-class player at Manchester City, Cherki will undoubtedly benefit from Guardiola’s guidance as he matures into a well-rounded footballer in the coming seasons.
