Barry-Murphy: Cardiff…

Cardiff City’s pursuit of the title stumbled again with a 1-1 draw against Barnsley on Tuesday night, a result that head coach Brian Barry-Murphy described as “very frustrating.”

Despite the disappointment, he emphasized that the setback will not deter the Bluebirds from maintaining their focus on self-improvement.

Rubin Colwill put City ahead early on with his first goal since returning from injury, while Ollie Tanner came close to adding a second goal, only to be thwarted by Barnsley goalkeeper Owen Goodman on two occasions.

“We began the match just as we intended. We were aggressive from the first minute, dominating play in front of our supporters and scored a fantastic goal,” Barry-Murphy stated.

“Ollie Tanner had a great chance to extend our lead and take full control of the game, but we weren’t able to capitalize.”

Barnsley equalized 11 minutes later through Scott Banks, which, according to Barry-Murphy, shifted the momentum in favor of the home side and complicated the first half.

Despite David McGoldrick posing a threat for Barnsley, Cardiff maintained possession with 73% of the ball. Barry-Murphy believed a winning goal was still within reach, even if clear-cut chances were limited, with Colwill’s effort in the second half being Cardiff’s best opportunity.

“I always have faith. I believed we would win on Saturday [against Lincoln] but it didn’t happen,” Barry-Murphy remarked.

“Later in the game [against Barnsley], we were very much in control. We aimed to get more balls into the box and create chances, but it just didn’t pan out. We didn’t create enough clear opportunities to say we should have won.”

Cardiff has now secured only one win in their last four matches, falling four points behind League One leaders Lincoln City after previously holding the top spot for 105 days prior to the defeat on Saturday.

Nonetheless, they still hold a nine-point advantage over the teams chasing them for promotion, although Bolton could cut that lead to six points on Saturday before Cardiff faces Exeter.

Barry-Murphy underlined that the key is to maintain consistency: “My focus is on our team and ensuring we’re improving continuously. The league campaign is seldom straightforward.”

“The ambition within the dressing room is evident to me, and I can feel it every day. The players did everything I asked of them tonight, and we could have easily won the game—yet we didn’t.”

“This is the most exciting time of the season. There’s a palpable sense of eagerness from the entire club, and real determination in the dressing room.

“We don’t require assistance from anyone else; we must concentrate on ourselves, strive to improve consistently, and maintain an insatiable desire to win for this club.”
