Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, has responded sharply to what he perceives as biased media coverage of his team. Despite Atletico nearly securing their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League this week, the spotlight shifted to Julian Alvarez’s remarks post-match.
When asked about his future at the club for next season, Alvarez did not confirm his position, leading to considerable speculation. The Argentine striker has been linked with top clubs including Barcelona, Arsenal, and others over the past year, with much of the chatter coming from his own camp.
Simeone’s Reaction: ‘I’m Addressing Our People, Not the Media’
Simeone was naturally asked about Alvarez’s comments during a press conference ahead of their match against Getafe, and he did not hold back.

“I understand your questions. We defeated Club Brugge, and the highlight was Oblak’s incredible save. After beating Barcelona, the focus was on Griezmann possibly leaving. Griezmann is staying, and he’ll play in the final. Now we’ve won again, and the question is about Julian’s future,” he told Marca.
“Julian’s comments were appropriate and he’s contributing significantly. Right now, I’m conversing with our players, not journalists… We’re in a solid position. I assured them we would compete, and we are indeed contending at the end of the season.”
Alex Baena’s Limited Playing Time
Alex Baena, last summer’s standout signing, is facing a challenging phase, having only played 21 minutes in Atletico’s past four matches. Simeone has urged him to step up, reiterating his expectations once again.

“He’s an exceptional player. We’ve discussed this multiple times. He needs to elevate his performance level, and when he does, he’s phenomenal. He can adapt to various positions. The key lies with him, and I’m confident he will continue to deliver for us.”
Simeone raises a valid point about how the media tends to amplify controversial narratives rather than acknowledging consistent performances. It is reasonable to question whether Atletico has been receiving the recognition they deserve lately. Furthermore, the Griezmann situation arises from his own discussions with Orlando City, and Alvarez is savvy enough to answer questions about his future without sparking headlines.
