Cheltenham dominated the first half, creating several opportunities but only managing to test goalkeeper Ian Lawlor once before halftime.
A low shot from Luke Young in the eighth minute was saved by Lawlor.
Early in the second half, Max Sanders narrowly missed with a free-kick for Crewe before Bickerstaff’s breakthrough came.
Young played a forward ball, and former Wrexham striker Bickerstaff displayed his skillful footwork to create space for a powerful shot that found the net past Lawlor.
Cheltenham nearly extended their lead in the 69th minute when a shot from Thomas was parried by Lawlor, with Isaac Hutchinson’s follow-up striking the left post.
