Leonardo Bittencourt, the seasoned German footballer, took a moment to express his appreciation for his long-time club, Werder Bremen, during Saturday’s celebrations. His Bundesliga team honored his milestone of 300 appearances by presenting him with a special jersey. Bittencourt played a full match against relegation rivals Wolfsburg on Saturday, helping his team secure a crucial three points.
Challenges for Bremen Supporters
Before the tense relegation clash on Saturday, Wolfsburg reluctantly increased the ticket allocation for visiting Bremen fans from 2,800 to 3,400 due to concerns stemming from previous incidents with Hamburg fans. To ensure safety around the Volkswagen Arena, additional police were deployed. However, this did not prevent altercations outside the stadium. Bremen ultras faced delays in entering the venue due to a standoff with law enforcement, and both DAZN and Fanhilfe Bremen confirmed that the unrest outside met the definition of a riot. Three police officers were injured, and ten visiting fans from Bremen were detained, with at least one ultra group choosing to boycott the match in protest.
Bittencourt Celebrates with Fans
At 32, Bittencourt is set to leave Bremen at the end of the season when his contract expires. Before joining the Hanseaten, he played in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund, Köln, and Hoffenheim, where those three teams contributed to 84 of his 300 top-flight appearances. It’s clear that Werder holds a special place in Bittencourt’s heart.
Bittencourt initially joined Bremen on loan from Hoffenheim in the 2019/20 season and was signed permanently for €7 million the following summer. The Leipzig native, who rose through the ranks at Energie Cottbus, remained loyal to Bremen even after their relegation in 2020/21, continuing with the club through one of his seven consecutive seasons in the 2. Bundesliga.
“This gesture shows how much the club means to me and how I’ve tried to give back in some small way,” Bittencourt shared in the mixed zone. “It fills me with pride to have played my 300th game in a Werder jersey.”
“Winning obviously makes it better,” he added. “Because if we didn’t get points, it would be a pretty miserable journey home.”
