The Scottish Women’s Premier League title race has become highly competitive once again, as league leaders Glasgow City, fresh off their Sky Sports Cup victory, faced a setback against reigning champions Hibernian.

Mirroring their male counterparts in the Scottish Premiership, Heart of Midlothian has entered the fray as a potential surprise champion following their impressive 4-1 victory over Celtic.

City’s recent 1-0 loss at home to Hibs means that Hibernian is now just one point behind the 16-time champions, setting the stage for a crucial first-versus-second matchup this Sunday, which will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland at Petershill Park.

At one point, the men’s league was being touted as one of the most thrilling title races in Europe, with four teams in contention after Motherwell fell out of the picture in recent weeks.

Now, the women’s league is stepping into the spotlight, with four, possibly five, teams holding realistic aspirations of finishing at the top by the end of the season.

Hibs’ Resilient Spirit

Hibernian, despite a shaky start to their title defense, have emerged as dark horses. Following the departure of head coach Grant Scott to Celtic in December, they have flourished under former Scotland midfielder Joelle Murray, going on a seven-match unbeaten streak and narrowing the gap to just eight points from the leaders, currently sitting in fifth place.

Eilidh Adams netted a stunning winner against City and highlighted her team’s fighting spirit.

“It was a challenging game,” said the 21-year-old Scotland striker in an interview with BBC Alba. “We were defending intensely towards the end, which reflects our never-give-up mentality. Personally, I don’t score goals like that often, so I’m thrilled with it, especially since it was the winning goal.”

“I’ve been working on adding that kind of finishing to my game. I’ve improved in the box, but long-range strikes aren’t my forte, so I thought I’d just hit it and see what happens, and it went in.”

“It was crucial for us to grab those three points, and we’re taking it one match at a time as we move forward.”

Hibs are expected to keep up their momentum with a home match against sixth-place Thistle this Sunday.

City’s Frustration After Defeat

City approached Wednesday’s match against Hibs in high spirits after bouncing back from a league defeat by Rangers to secure the League Cup for an impressive seventh time.

Despite having a Scottish Cup semi-final to look forward to, the 16-time league champions’ ambitions for their first title since 2013 have been severely impacted by two consecutive league losses.

As they head into the SWPL split, which divides the league into two for the final fixtures, City had boasted a strong five-point lead.

However, following a draw at home to Celtic, a loss at Rangers—marking their first domestic defeat of the season—and now the defeat against Hibs, the title race is wide open once more.

Head coach Leanne Ross voiced her “frustration,” noting, “we controlled large parts of the game,” and she did not attribute the defeat to any fatigue from the cup final, believing Adams had fouled defender Amy Anderson leading up to the goal.

“Experiencing a result like this often drives us to come back stronger next time,” she stated on City’s X account. “You can count on us to perform better on Sunday.”

Upcoming Old Firm Derby on BBC Alba

Rangers bounced back from their League Cup disappointment by narrowly defeating Thistle at home, courtesy of a single goal from on-loan Roma midfielder Kim Shin-ji during the first half.

Head coach Leanne Crichton will be satisfied with the win, bringing her side within two points of the league leaders, City, after their Glasgow rivals thwarted Rangers’ quest for a treble on Sunday.

As the big matches continue, Rangers will face Celtic in another high-stakes city derby on Monday, with hopes for a second league title, their first since 2022, reignited.

This match will also be broadcast live on BBC Alba.

Can Hearts Claim Their First Title?

Just as Derek McInnes’ men’s team has led the Premiership since October, Eva Olid’s Hearts could become the standout story of the SWPL.

They benefitted from an own goal by Celtic goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers but capitalized fully, with goals from Erin Husband and a penalty by Georgia Timms, before Celtic’s Saoirse Noonan found the net, only for Carly Johns to quickly restore a three-goal lead.

This marked a significant turnaround from the previous month’s 5-3 defeat to the same opponents and followed a derby loss to Hibs in their last outing.

If they maintain this momentum on Sunday, they could top the table and start to dream of their first-ever Scottish title.

Celtic Seeks Redemption After Loss

Celtic might cite the red card given to on-loan London City Lionesses defender Maddi Wilde for handball, which led to Hearts’ penalty, as a key factor in their defeat. However, they were already trailing 2-0 at that point.

Head coach Scott can take some comfort in the fact that, despite slipping to fourth in the table, they remain just four points off the top due to City’s recent stumble.

Indeed, their loss to Hearts was their first in 10 matches, and their pursuit of a second league title and first since 2024 is still very much alive.

As the title race continues to unfold, it promises to be a fiercely competitive finish as the final six games will determine the champions.
